A status bar would be nice :)

 The basic blue-prints

This is just a camera trim design.

Decided to bust out the Photoshop skills :) Ubunye means Unity. This one took a couple hours.

This is the start of my UI ideas :) I think it is coming along pretty well. I have never tried anything like this before.

Here is the Homescreen (Not complete yet). You can scroll side to side and pull up the arrow to view options (pictured below).

Just some basic icons I made for the pull up dock. Notice the arrow still points up ;) more options!

Here is the famous Unity Lenses :) I am trying to condense it so it is clean on a small screen. I will be adding more to it though!

Here is more of the previous design! Take notice of the sidebar ;)
 Filter options!!! :D You're welcome!

A boy can dream can't he? Maybe Blender WILL make it to a mobile phone... Blender Game Engine to Mobile direct testing? Just a thought :) Anyways the top scroll corresponds with the bottom selection. No name tags yet. Do you really need them? *sigh* I guess I will make them. The icons could use a theme... I will also make a filter option for this Application section, but not tonight. I am tired :P Tomorrow!!

Date: 11/29/11
I decided to change the title of the filter because I realized that it might get confusing to know which lens you are on. Here is the application lens also. There is no game option because there is a lens for that already on the bottom. ALSO, I have been thinking... Maybe I should make the filter only half of the screen. That way you can see what lens you are on and it wont be as confusing. I will work with what I have at the moment though.

Just in case you didn't notice, the wallpaper blurs whenever a message is shown and when the lens is applied. :)

Here is another phone design (orange trim of course). It's still not what I am picturing in my head, but it is getting there :)

I always hated the calender in Ubuntu, so I made my own for the Ubunye project :) I know you are telling yourself "What? There aren't 5 days in November!" Don't worry. This is just a mockup. I just wanted to see what it would look like without spending an hour making sure each number is placed in the right spot. I will leave that to the programmers :)

Just coming up with new stuff :) I like minimalistic design so I just made a plain clock and added numbers to the outside so it is easier to read. I love doing this stuff!!! I should design a lockscreen...

Hehe... What the heck. I have a couple minutes till I go to work. So here is the lockscreen (I may change it, but this is what I came up with). It works like the pins in a door. You have to get the right combination to unlock it. You could even make it so it has a specific order or even add more pins! Ubuntu is known for security. Why not make a lockscreen that is worthy of the same recognition? Cheers!

Ideas and Things to Do for the Ubunye Design

UI Design

  • Attract the people (survey the people as to what they want)
  • Look into the Ayatana mailing list
  • Intuitive UI that anyone can jump into (keep away from lots of submenus)
  • Really need lenses for contacts?
  • Possible scrollbar change?
  • Smaller icons with names
  • Contrasting Calendar
  • Work on the lockscreen and show how it works
  • Look into cloud experience and synergy

Phone Design and Software

  • Unique phone design WITH customization (back or front cover?)
  • Possibly different color for bottom buttons? Also different design (something with gestures?)
  • Indicator animations that are practical. Custom colors.
  • Support for social media but as installation packages in S.C.
  • Reduce clutter by having NO bloatware coming preinstalled. Make them optional (like Ubuntu installation!)
  • Opensource all the way!

Some of you were asking about the icons and things of that nature, so I worked some more on it. There are icons in columns of 4 now with name tags so you know what the app is. Also, I redid the scrollbars to look like Ubuntu now. Should I keep them? Any other thoughts? I have to go to work now but I should be back later tonight.

Designing is difficult when you work :P anyways, I have been thinking about tweaking the bar at the top and this is what I am thinking of implementing. It's basically the Gnome 3 look, nothing crazy unique. I dont want to get too far from Ubuntu (even though it's slowly looking like I am heading that way). I will do my best to keep the Ubuntu feel :) so what do you think of this? Personally the left one looks more crisp... maybe it could be part of the lockscreen and then expand to look like the right image when it goes to the home screen :)  Any suggestions?

Also.... FLASH CATALYST ROCKS MY SOCKS OFF!
I have been watching YouTube videos and I think it looks like a program I could use! No programming required! :D BOO-YA!

Icons are a big problem with my mock ups. Right now, the push is towards the Faenza icon theme. Unless I find something else, that is what I will try to work with in my upcoming designs. If anyone has any other icons that should be put in for consideration, I would love to check them out :)

Here is the new look with the frame change :) I am thinking i might want to try to get the right image's scroll bars into the design as well. But, I dont want to make it look like there is a lot going on in the screen. Also, I took off the transparent black background for these images to see what it looked like.  Not too bad but it lost some of the Unity feel as well... I will figure it out. I think it will get better when I redo the filter options :)

Just in case my designs aren't clear enough at the moment, I made a quick image of part of the layout showing what to do. I will begin working with Flash Catalyst pretty soon :)

Date: 12/6/11

I tried to do a little UI layout cleanup. It is not the more recent design, though. The newer design wont be as square as these images show. It will have the curved frame, like the design with the green leaf. This is just me going back to the basics and figuring out the UI before I move forward again. I hope you like it :) PS- Sorry the image is kinda small..

I have done it! I finally started working with Flash Catalyst! It's definitely a work in progress but you can try out what I have at the moment! :D Now when I change the layout and everything I will make sure to upload it so you can view the changes and additions. Do I hear icons?...

Here is my Ubunye phone, now version 3! I have decided that fancy stuff needed to be thrown out the window and something needed to be done with as minimal parts possible. After some fun work my newest creation was born!

I know what you are thinking: "What the heck? This is a really simple design!" Haha you are correct! Clean lines, eye-pleasing, everything a phone wants to be. You might also be trying to guess where the power button is... I didn't put it in there because it is flush with the top right edge along the back.

Why asymmetrical? I say why not try something new? The thumb covers that portion of the screen as well, so I decided to break away from the standard. You never know until you try!

I wont be the back of this design because, wait for it...... I will be modeling this in 3d! When I have the time of course. Well, see you later for now! Stay tuned!!!

3D!!!!!!!
This is a work in progress for your needy eyes! I will be back with more in a couple days!

Just kidding ;) I wanted to work on it some more!

    3. the lock screen idea is great :) very tasteful design work as well nick.

Have you considered a phone without any fixed buttons? a la icecream sandwich? i think that would free up space when required and also bring context sensitive buttons to the UI.

    4. Pssst... Skype isn't open source. ;)

    6. Man AWESOME !!!! I will definitely buy this phone or if it will be portable to Android I will downloaded and pay for it. Keep up the work.

i was just starting to refine it too :(

    8. @Daniel15- Thanks! It's a work in progress.

@Peter- Actually i thought of making the bottom buttons a screen where you could change the theme or just have programmed gestures but ice cream sandwiches are delicious ;) I will look into it and see what kind of idea I can come up with.

@ozewiezeloose- Yeah, but I thought "Why can't Skype be on an Ubuntu phone? It works on the desktop." So I just added that icon :)

@Vinu- Um..... I assume that is a question about whether it will come to Android. Unfortunately, I have NO programming experience whatsoever. Sorry Mate :P I am sure it can be done though.

@Nikki- If i do eventually figure out how to program (or find one of my programming friends to do it) I will make sure that it is free. I don't like to take money from people. You should see me on my birthdays... Thanks though :)

@Anonymous- NO!! Don't give up! It looks like it is really coming together for you :) Just keep at it and don't worry about anyone else. I still have A LOT of refining to do myself. It's really looking good though!

    10. I found just what I need! Adobe Flash Catalyst :) I can create interactive designs with it. Should be cool. Hopefully I can run a trial :)

    11. Just wanted to say I LOVE YOUR DESIGNS!!! Especially how you keep your designs minimalistic but still really usable for everyone. Such as the analog clock with numbers by the hands, really great idea :-)

When you feel your design is final, I emphatically suggest you try and get it to the Ubuntu dev's directly and anyplace else you can, or try to start a survey with other mock-up to see what people think as a whole.

I'm going to be trying very hard to keep my Droid 2 Global until the Ubuntu phones are out, or atleast until ISO or Roms are available to put them on our own devices. Can't wait to see what comes down the pipe line.

      > God bless ya and your work!! Keep it up :-D

    12. @Anonymous- Hahah thanks Clem :) I am trying to do exactly what you said, "usable for everyone". Of course I love minimalistic design as well ;) As for the clock, I once wanted to become a watch designer. I dont actually use the coroflot site anymore but my watch is still there :) http://s3images.coroflot.com/user_files/individual_files/original_330453_CTX5zgbB5KzIGWVk5tF8JLd1l.jpg

I started this page to do exactly what you suggested, to see what people think as a whole. Also, i submitted to ubuntuforums.org to get reactions and feedback as well. It has been a good way for me to see what people want in a phone :)

      Thanks again! :)

    14. thank you its really good! AWESOME))

    15. This is great! I could find a lot of good ideas in your work. Really good! I hope the ubuntu phone will be available as soon as possible.

      ReplyDelete
    16. @amru rosyada- I suppose so :)

@suhaimi- I think a terminal should be optional when you first turn on the phone. Or, at least be in the software center for download. It could be helpful for the more advanced users. And thanks :)

      @Anonymous- Thanks :)

@Anonymous- Anyone can use my ideas if they want. They are nothing special, just thoughts :) I really hope the phone will come out soon too! But, like many new projects, it will take time :P All we can do is wait and dream :)

    17. Looks pretty cool, but I would ditch the back and search buttons moulded on to the Ubunye and just have the Ubuntu Logo in the bottom middle. Representing the Unity Dash button. All other back buttons and search could be graphical or have them hidden so they light up only after the Ubuntu button is pressed.

      Good work keep it up

    18. Not so keen on the white border around the green apps page. It doesn't look sophisticated enough. Nice clean lines top and bottom would be better. Looks to much like a toy as it is.

      ReplyDelete
    19. Rather than have buttons on the side how about touch sensitive areas too keep the profile of the phone symmetrical. No physical moving parts. Complete uni-boded phone.

    20. I'm the anon from earlier you told not to get discouraged.
I've been working on making my concept more visually and functionally consistent with desktop unity. any comments/criticisms would be appreciated.

      1. Lol, that's the problem with open design isn't it, people implementing your ideas for a competing product before you can :P

      2. Yeah... I don't really mind though. I didn't have any plans of going further at the moment. I am a conceptual artist. I don't have the skills yet to take this further. :P

Gosh, the thin frame on the screen is really nice, love it.
The wallpaper blurs whenever get new notification is good idea.
Buuut, the home screen design is kinda android/iOS like... unity like will make it better I guess
