Ubuntu Laptop Concept

(click to see full size... it's big.)
I got bored tonight, so what do I do? I start designing again. But, this time it's not mobile. It's a laptop. I didnt really like the laptop designs that they were coming out with for Ubuntu so I wanted to make my own. I kind of view this as a competitor against the Macbook Air.

As usual, I created my own GUI for Ubuntu. This is a TON easier to design for a laptop than a phone. I can tell you that much. I hope you guys, and gals, like it. Let me know what you like and DON'T like. :) Cheers!!!

**UPDATE**
I tried to sleep. Apparently, I am still in design mode. It is currently 2:06am and I have to get up at 8:00am to go to class. BUT I THOUGHT OF A BRILLIANT IDEA WHILE LAYING IN BED!
I love clean energy. And, what better way to design a laptop than to incorporate Green thinking ;) SOLAR PANELS ON THE LID. Need I say more? You wont have to constantly have this baby plugged in to charge. Let the ambient light in the room do it for you :) Of course, design will need to play a big role in the incorporation of this idea. Else, the product wont sell (Not that it's for sale anyways. Just saying). So, here I go again on a design spree. Wish me luck! ;)

Here is what I came up with. I know that the laptop brand wouldn't be Ubuntu... but I still like to think that it could be. Please note that the laptop wouldn't rely on solar power alone, but would utilize it when it isn't plugged in. Once again, feel free to comment and make suggestions!

Eh??? :) I know it's not that great. It's just an idea. overall the feeling is too big I think. I feel like an old person looking at this screen :P

By the way, the dual cameras could also be for security when logging in. You could have it run a bio-metric facial scan. ALSO!!! I just thought of this! Hehe I am sure you have heard of a 3DS... why not incorporate that into a laptop? That could be good with games BUT ALSO 3D modeling programs like Blender. It will give you an even better feel of your 3D model and you could look around it slightly when you move your head so you dont have to constantly use a mouse :) Just a thought

NOTE!!!
You can now download the photoshop file for the front of the laptop :) I merged most of the layers but you can still create your own desktop UI :)

  2. Good suggestion, Anonymous. I have checked out System76 before, I just don't think they have the technology at the moment to make it this thin... but I will submit it and see what they say. I don't think I want any money though :P

  5. The UI needs work. I just came up with it really quick without thinking it through a whole lot. I was mainly focused on the laptop. Thanks for the comments though :)

  6. Great concept! You should realy contact the Ubuntu team. I am only wondering if it could be possible for such a little solar panel to capture enaugh energy.

  8. Anonymous- The solar panel wouldnt be the only source of power. You would still have the plug available. The solar panel is so you dont have to have it plugged in to charge all the time. It would allow for constant charging and possible longer battery up-time. Thanks though!

Hans- FO SHO!!! That would be awesome :)

  11. Looks like you got featured on OMG!Ubuntu!. Great work nick.
one thing though is that even the lowest power consumption systems planned would require a solar panel the size of the laptop back to power, and would lack the nessicary voltage to do anything other than slow the power drain from battery.

Would it be possible for you to distribute the laptop image for use as a sort of way for other people to display thier work for ubuntu unity or for wallpapers?

  17. I think this idea is great. My only critique is that this can become cluttered quickly. I understand that making this full screen would help but like the social media lens fills up very fast. Overall, great idea but just need a few tweaks if Canonical did this, I think.

  18. Hi, I've one. It is running well. Lennovo support was terrible giving mis-information and outright lies were told to us. According to the "Lenovo Depot Repair Center Repair Action Report" that came back with the machine, the repair was replace hard drive. The telephone support told us that the motherboard needed to be replaced and it was not available and that is why the repair was taking over 5 weeks. If it was jus t a HDD replacement it should have taken no time at all. There is no problem finding a HDD at a repair depot I would hope. I am a very unhappy customer Lenovo. I hope that some people will think twice about buying any product from you. As a small business owner, if something this bad happened, I would bend over backward to make sure my customer was happy in the end. No such thing with Lenovo. I asked maybe if they could put in an extra 4GB of ram to help make up for my inconvience, no reply. The only thing that really surprised me was that we actually got our computer back. Lenovo you need to seriously look at how you treat your customers. thanks!

    1. ... ehhhh. Cool story bro :P I think you have me confused with someone else's blog. I don't work for Lenovo, nor do I want to? I do 3d modeling. Hope you get things settled with them bending over backwards for you...? Maybe look into building your own computer or something so you will know how to fix some stuff in da future. That's what I did. Cheers Christina-plug adapter!
